Pods, start
Sketch
These sketches were done on 18 Nov 2021.
One evening I did a bunch of sketches using a 11x14” bristol pad and a soft graphite woodless pencil. One or more of the other sketches may become more art. This was the original sketch:
I scanned this on my flatbed scanner and imported it into Photoshop.
Coloration, first pass
These were initially started in January 2023.
With so much time having passed since I initially drew it, I had no idea what the vision was, if anything. This was somewhat liberating, since I could really go anywhere. At the time I felt like the little pod circles in the center were the subject, and I wanted these to be somewhat lifelike, so I knew I wanted to do some kind of warm color.
But I also wanted them to be otherworldly, so I wanted it to skew yellow/orange or maybe green.
The background area should complement or contrast those colors, so I chose blues and purples because these were both cooler in tone and also roughly complementary to the yellows/oranges.
One thing that I really appreciate about digital media is that experimentation is a lot easier. the area under the pods felt like it needed something more interesting, so I tried putting little red cocoon type things down there.
I don’t know that these will stay in, but it was a fun experiment.
I don’t know how far along this is yet. I don’t have the full vision realized for this yet, so I don’t feel like I’m even done with the base colors.
